Growing up in New Mexico, I was surrounded by Rio Grande style rugs and blankets, but I never fathomed of producing those myself. It all began when I entered a weaving shop in Chama, N.M in the fall of 2020. As I looked around, I was inspired by the various colors of wool and finished products. And I’ll never forget the moment I saw a room filled with looms. I thought to myself, “I have to get on one of those and I have to learn how to weave!” But I had a long way to go before I could create my own rug. So, I asked for a book to learn the craft and the store clerk sold me what I now refer to as the “Weaving Bible” a book by Rachel Brown. Reading about the craft and weaving “mug rugs” on a lap loom really helped me learn a lot my first year. Then in May of 2021, I took the beginners course at Tierra Wools, and the rest is history!
When I get on my loom, I feel so connected to my cultural past and I feel more alive in the present. If it weren't for the pandemic, I don't know if I would have pursued weaving, but I’m grateful for being given the opportunity to learn and the peace and sense of accomplishment it gives me. I also have to thank my husband Jesse for his attentive and loving support. (I could not set up my loom without him!) Thank you for your time and taking an interest in my small business!
